Open syllables are "happy" syllables that end in a vowel, where the vowel says its name=like me or go. Learning this pattern helps kids quickly recognize long vowel sounds an dread more smoothly.
Closed syllables happen when a vowel is followed by a consonant, which "closes it in" and makes a short sound- like cat or bed. This is one of the most common patterns in early reading and a must-know for decoding success.
