R-controlled vowels occur when the letter r changes the way a vowel sounds-like ar, (far) er (fern), ir (stir), or (torn) and ur (turn). Sometimes called "Bossy R," these special sounds help kids understand that not all vowels will follow the usual conventions for vowels.
